Our scheme for the regeneration of One Housing's Kidwells Estate in Maidenhead, on a prominent site facing the town centre across a Green Flag status park, met our Framework Client's aspirations to provide new dwellings for their existing tenants without them having to move off-site during construction, and in addition provided new private sale dwellings on the site by maximising the development density.
Seven new buildings containing 204 dwellings are arranged on the site, woven amongst the existing buildings to allow phased development, with the emphasis on creating linked, landscaped places reflecting the site's park-side location. The bulidings have a distinctive 'wedge' form that allows views through the site from the town across the park and gives the development a unique character and strong identity.
The buildings range in height from three to six storeys, responding to the character of the surrounding area and the scale of the shared spaces created within the site. At the heart of the scheme is a landscaped courtyard: a shared open space complementing the neighboring Kidwells Park and providing a safe place for play. It has been successful in bringing together existing and new residents across all tenures.
